Changes within the Library
Spring 2020 \ ACCESS ACM 16
The new Thomas Welcome Center serves as
an inviting first point of entry for prospective
students, alumni, and visitors to the
Cumberland Campus. The Thomas Welcome Center is
named in honor of Dorothy “Dottie” and Danny Thomas
and funded in part through their generous gift.
“First impressions matter,” said David Jones, Vice
President of Advancement and Community Relations
& Executive Director of the ACM Foundation. “Having
a centralized starting point for campus visitors and
high school tours increases our ability to positively
engage with prospective Trojans in new ways, including
a dedicated multimedia room. It’s an important tool in
opening the door to higher education for others, and
a project I know that Dottie and Danny, an incredibly
community-minded couple, would be proud to see
realized.”
ACM Information Center’s team will staff the
Thomas Welcome Center, and be responsible for
providing campus tours, providing general information
regarding academic programs, services, events, course
information, and campus directions. The Thomas
Welcome Center will include a Welcome Desk, an
interactive electronic kiosk, program literature displays,
a lounge area with seating for forty individuals, a
multimedia presentation room with seating for fifty,
office space for staff, restroom facilities, and storage.
The Thomas Welcome Center is located within the
same building as the Donald L. Alexander Library and
the Office of the President.

Within the Donald L. Alexander Library, the recent addition of
the Math Study Lab and small group collaboration spaces join
the Reading and Writing Center (RAWC) and Speech Study
Lab in transforming the space for increased student learning
and engagement. The College Library offers quiet study rooms,
and a lounge area while continuing to serve as the home of the
Allegany County Genealogical Society’s offices, the Appalachian
Collection, and the Janet Zastrow Cook Willa Cather and Rare
Book Collections.
