Friends of Island
Beach State Park
Island Beach State Park is a prime example of
New Jersey’s natural treasures: a preserved
barrier island featuring 10 miles of pristine
beaches, an extensive dune system, tidal
marshes and untouched maritime forest.
The Friends of Island Beach State Park, a
nonprofit volunteer organization formed to
enhance interpretive, educational, recreational
and research programs, encourages public
appreciation and stewardship of the park
through public events including the May
Day Festival in the spring, the Beach Plum
Festival in the fall and the New Year’s Day
Hike. FOIBSP hosts the Barrier Island Classic
Surf Contest. We operate the Beach Camera
at Ocean Beach Area 1 (OBA1) and the Pete
McLain Osprey Cam. For those looking to
learn more about the ecology of the park, join
us for our Lecture Series featuring a different
speaker every Sunday starting January 20th.
Want to get involved in helping Island Beach
State Park? The organization hosts two beach
grass planting events in the spring and the
fall, with 60,000 beach grass culms planted
annually to help build the natural dune
system.
The Friends of Island Beach State Park is
headquartered at the Island Beach State
Park Interpretive Center. Stop by to learn

SOUTHERN OCEAN BREW TRAIL
Surf & Sip the LBI Region with
the New Southern Ocean Brew Trail
The Southern Ocean Chamber of Commerce has established the first brew trail
at the Jersey Shore. This trail is one of the first in the nation to be infused with
non-drinking stops. In addition to the breweries that are featured, other stops
that reflect our surfing history and lifestyle.
This is not a pub crawl, it’s an opportunity for enthusiasts age 21 or older
to experience our unique Jersey culture, get to meet local experts, try
authentic products and take part in the Long Beach Island Region like
never before. It is the purpose of the program to build loyalty for local
brands and encourage visits through the year. The trail is launching with
three craft breweries, Manaferkin, Ship Bottom Brewery and Pinelands
Brewery. Other featured stops include South End Surf ’N Paddle with board
shaping and customization, as well as the option to take part in a standup
paddle tour or lesson; Ann Coen Gallery for viewing local surf-related
photography and art; Jetty for surf-design apparel; the Tuckerton Seaport’s
Surf Museum; boat-building and surfboard workshops; and the Southern
Ocean Visitor Center for guides, maps and information. The trail will provide
an opportunity to check out locally designed and manufactured surf related
products, as well as scheduling lessons or SUP tours for future visits.
When you have completed the trail, you can enter to win a package of gift
certificates from all participating Southern Ocean Made Surf & Sip Brew Trail
businesses. Begin by picking up Southern Ocean Made Surf & Sip brochure at
any of the participating locations or download the LOYALE APP. Use the app
or your map to validate each stop on the trail. No purchase is necessary to
enter or get validated.
Southern Ocean County’s trail was created to be enjoyed throughout the
year, it is not a timed activity and all completed entries, either through the app
or as a map submission, have the same chance to win as long as they are
completed before Thanksgiving 2018. Like good beer, this trail is meant to be
enjoyed at your leisure. Do not attempt to take part in any surf activity or drive
under the influence of alcohol.
