After three decades and tens of
thousands served, Southern Ocean
County Chamber of Commerce’s
Chowderfest Weekend has come to
represent the LBI experience
Long before there were food throw-downs
and tasting competitions, members of
the Southern Ocean County Chamber of
Commerce established a much-needed
event to help the economy grow beyond
the summer season. The world has
changed since the first Chowderfest
Cook-Off took place in 1988, but some
things are meant to last.
One of the best-known festivals on the
East Coast and the festival of Long
Beach Island, Chowderfest Weekend has
extended the season well past Labor Day,
paving the way for other pre- and postsummer
activities to call the attention of
visitors and businesses to the charm of
Southern Ocean County. In celebration
of the 30th Anniversary, September
29–30, 2018, the Southern Ocean County
Chamber of Commerce Chowderfest
Committee is looking forward to adding
milestone-worthy upgrades to make the
celebration a true reunion inviting back
all who ever sampled chowder under the
big tents.
The two-day festival begins with the
free Merchant Mart on Saturday,
which features over 100 vendors, live
entertainment, beer and cider on tap
and a specialty food court. Sunday, the
top restaurants in the region set up shop
and compete for attendees’ votes in an
unlimited chowder tasting. The stage
offers a variety of popular Shore bands
and, of course, plenty food and drink. If
you also want to explore the local shops,
enjoy the beach or take in the scenic
bay views, ticket-holders are permitted
to leave and re-enter the festival. Tickets
for the 2018 Chowder Cook-Off will be
available online at www.chowderfest.com
and at the Southern Ocean Chamber
Visitor Center at 265 W. Ninth Street,
Ship Bottom. For more information on
Chowderfest and its 30th Anniversary,
join thousands of fans on the Official LBI
Chowderfest Facebook page or by visiting
chamber websites www.visitLBIregion.
