In 1991, this symbol of Tampa was
celebrating its Centennial.

The 100-year-old red brick
building with six silver
minarets standing alongside the
Hillsborough River in Tampa
was, as it is today, the home of the
University of Tampa. More than
$12 million was spent to restore
this National Historic Landmark
that was built by railroad tycoon
Henry B. Plant as the Tampa Bay
Hotel. The 511-room hotel was
inspired by a Moorish castle,
and the Plants filled it with art,
antiques and furniture that they
acquired throughout the world.
The building also is home to the
Henry B. Plant Museum that,
luckily, still has Cynthia Gandee
Zinober as its executive director.
Our “A Look At...” article in this
issue featured Teresa and Frank
Hibbard. At the time, he was the
mayor of the City of Clearwater.
During that interview, Teresa
quoted Helen Keller when asked
for her words of wisdom saying,
“I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I
can do something, and I will not
refuse to do the something that I
can do.” Frank stated that the best
advice he had ever been given was “Don’t give up! Most things
I have achieved did not come easily or quickly.”
