Scott Menaul grew up in an artistic
family. He was introduced to the
great art that is exhibited at the Art
Institute and other museums in his
native home of Chicago by his mother,
who was a painter. His father, a lover of
jazz, was instrumental in forming Scott’s
appreciation of abstraction.
Scott began his career in art with
pinhole photography, which enabled
him to build his own equipment, as well
as create images in black and white.
While studying electrical and computer
engineering at Syracuse University, he
found himself attracted to art, particularly
to that of the French abstractionist Joan
Miro, whose work stimulated him with
its striking, yet simple, complexities. It
was an epiphany for Scott to observe how
one’s imagination could be opened up
to an unlimited number of possibilities.
Therefore, following his graduation and
a brief career in electrical engineering,
he left to build a life in photography
and graphic design. It was then that
Scott perfected his eye for color and
composition. His expertise with digital
design led him to developing threedimensional
works, which allowed him
to express his inner feelings within an
almost spiritual realm.
