In Argentina in 1971 Pedro
and I engaged in a terrifi c dual … lap after lap after
lap. At the end of the fi rst long straight, there is a
very long, very fast, probably 150 mph 180° corner. I
was slightly faster than Pedro but could never get quite
alongside going into the corner to make a pass.
“And, of course, when I got anywhere close the door was
always fi rmly closed, until fi nally, I feinted to the inside
and then got alongside on the outside. He could have
taken me out, but he didn’t. He kept his line, giving me
just enough room to stay on the road and I passed him.
Pure sportsmanship on his part.”
“Loco gringo! Loco f***ing
gringo!”
