Behind the Tape…
By Cpl. Richard Dascall
Hope everyone has had a good month and is enjoying the last bit of their
summer. I know I couldn’t be happier that the weather is finally cooling off a
bit and I’m able to walk to my car in the morning without being covered in
sweat. Now that the kids are back in school, and the island is starting to slow
down some, I wanted to give everyone my annual winter tips.
To start with, always lock your doors. The time of year is quickly
approaching where we have people coming to the island looking for easy
targets. Keeping your home and car locked creates enough of an
inconvenience that it deters most criminals. Also, if your car is left somewhere
overnight, try to park somewhere with lighting and security cameras. This
way, if something does happen, it makes it easier for our detectives to find the
person. If you’re going out of town, try to have someone pick up your mail and
newspapers. Leaving these things out lets people know you’re not there and
makes your home a target. And most importantly, if you see something, say
something. Our officers are good, but they can’t be everywhere at once, and
you reporting suspicious activity helps us to deter crime before it happens.
Also, as a word of caution, don’t bother the sea turtles. This past month we
had some people remove baby sea turtles from the beach and bring them to
their hotel room. Believe it or not, this is something the federal government
considers so serious that they will send federal investigators to the scene
anytime day or night. The people who removed the turtles are going to be
dealing with this matter in a federal court. So try not to be like these people, it
is far beyond not worth it.
With all that being said, I hope everyone is able to enjoy the last bit of their
summer. We’re getting ready for the final push to make it through Labor Day
and Pirate Fest. I hope all of you are able to get the beach a few more times
before the cold sets in. And as always, if there’s anything we can do, feel free
to give us a call.
