New Post 154 Commander for the Legion Family
Greetings! I am the web mistress for Tybee Island American Legion Post
154 and the new contributing writer for this column. I thought it appropriate
to feature my inaugural article with the recently inducted Post 154 Legion
Commander, Irany, “Ron” Vollmer. I welcome Commander Vollmer to his new
position and his enthusiasm of maintaining the foundations of the national
organization with his positive direction of Post 154. The following account is
what Commander Vollmer expressed during our interview of his goals with the
aforementioned and a glimpse into his personal background that established
his qualities of honesty, compassion and dedication - elements of a great
commander!
Ron was career Army from 1972-1992. Now “retired” he works for the City of
Tybee Parking Services. He has been an active member of Post 154 for nineteen
years, maintaining ideals of selfless service - providing mutual helpfulness
to fellow vets, service members, youth and community - foundations of the
American Legion. He actively participates as Color Guard with Post 154. Ron
is honored to be elected as Post 154’s commander as the national legion
celebrates its 100th year. His agenda focuses upon the integrity of this revered
organization at our local level.
Chatting with him reveals his interesting background. As a young boy he
came to this country from Brazil. Growing up in NYC, he faced a very different
culture and language. He endured hardships along the way many of us may
not imagine. However, he feels as a result of strong family values, he moved
forward with a positive vision to succeed in his life’s path by helping others.
Ron sets his sites on continuing to strengthen the Post 154 Legion as
a family. He states, “We are three separate families living under one roof:
Legionnaires/the Vets, Ladies Auxiliary Unit 154/ALA, and Sons of American
Legion/SAL Squadron 154. While we share a common agenda to carry out the
objectives of the American Legion, we also need to support and communicate
with each family more openly. A unified family as an ‘all for one, one for all’
directive provides a positive and solid post benefiting our members and
community.” Vollmer realizes that a non-profit organization needs to be
financially sound. Operating funds are essential to the Post. Ron quickly points
out his appreciation toward the SAL and ALA. Together they have been an asset
with building improvements, such as funding the foam insulation ceiling in
the hall, new windows, and new updated bathrooms. These upgrades have
provided energy efficiency and a more comfortable environment for members
and the community attending legion events.
Commander Vollmer loves seeing families sharing time together. “Our
dinners and events are a terrific way to bring all of us together, but it is the
team of volunteers that ensure the events are successful!” He and wife Denise,
ALA member, are key people volunteering at Friday night Bingo and community
driven events. They know how to be part of the volunteer team supporting their
legion family! Let’s salute Ron on his mission of upholding the American Legion
foundations and dedication to the Post 154 family.
September will be busy for Post 154. Join us for our annual Patriot Day
