TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | SEPT 2018 25
Main Street Musings
Chantel Morton, Program Staff Director
Greetings! Is there any better month than September on Tybee? The crowds
disperse, temperatures start to dip, kids are in school, and pumpkin-spiced
everything is making a comeback! The Labor Day holiday weekend festivities will
serve to remind us that everyone who lives and works here helps to make our town
fab! The holiday weekend will include Labor Day Beach Bash with free performances
by Swinging Medallions & fireworks at the pier and then Tybee Farmer’s Market
on Monday. As the month continues, the fun continues with learning opportunities
beyond the classrooms! Surfers for Autism will be back mid-month and a Memorial
Dedication Ceremony in honor of the HS Otranto. Plus, we’re in the final stages of
prepping for the comeback of Tybee Community Day Celebration!
Thanks to the volunteers and groups that help put Tybee Community Day on.
Last year was the first time in five years that Community Day didn’t happen, so
we’re super excited for this year’s celebration on Sunday, October 14! Tybee’s
birthday is October 15, so for fun we’ll celebrate 131 years of community,
commerce, and culture! Roy & Martha and Spec will be performing. 15+ local nonprofit
organizations will be out on the field with information about who they are and
demos about what they do. Plus, this year neighborhood owners and operators of
local storefront businesses are invited to join in and set up a table to show what
they offer. After a hectic summer season, this “Tybee day” is a great way to get
back to normal, re-connect with neighbors, and maybe meet some new ones, too!
Info about the Dev’l Authority/Main Street Program can be found at
tybeeislandmainstreet.com. If you are interested in sponsoring one of our
community events and/or getting involved with keeping Tybee so fabulous just
send a quick email to the City’s Program staffer @ cmorton@cityoftybee.org.
Most of Tybee’s identity is authentic and remains progressively preserved
thanks to contributions that you, the city’s Historic Preservation Commission, Dev’l
Authority/Main Street Directors, Historical Society and other partners give all year
long. AND ... the work that started in March by a team of preservation sensitive
folks dedicated to keeping Tybee authentic by design continues for the South End
Overlay District.
I look forward to seeing you around town exploring everything available to you
“before the beach”…leisurely bike rides around the island (but not on Jones ),
outdoor dining at one of our many excellent restaurants, and walking to-n-fro store
to home.
As always, feel free to contact members of the Development Authority/Main
Street Board of Directors
or me with suggestions and/or concerns re: economic vitality and preservation.
See you around town!
