When I saw the title of this book, I just knew I had to read it! I also
hoped it would be a good read and one that I could pass on. My desires
were surpassed! But, I have to apologize in advance to the menfolk
readers out there, this is definitely a “chick book.”
In 1962, four 22-year-old best friends formed the Dirty Book Club.
Gloria, Marjorie, Liddy and Dot got together every full moon and drank,
ate, smoked and discussed their latest erotic book selection.
Fast forward 54 years and we meet M.J. Stark who has a pictureperfect
life. She has a dream job as a magazine editor, a handsome
doctor boyfriend and a glamorous life in New York City. When she
becomes disgruntled with her job, Dan, her boyfriend, asks her to come
to California and try life with him and she decides, what the hell, she’d
give it a try. But when she meets Gloria, Dan’s next-door neighbor, M.J.’s
whole life changes.
When Gloria and her three best friends abruptly move to Paris to
hor a 54 year old pact, Gloria leaves M.J. a mysterious invitation to join
her secret book club, along with a copy of Erica Jong’s Fear of Flying
and a key. Out of curiosity, M.J. decides to go to the meeting at a local
bookstore and discovers three other women, Addie, Dotty and Britt, who
have been selected by the club’s original members. After receiving the
rules of the club, the four very different women begin the next chapter
of the Dirty Book Club, where each woman not only shares vivid details
about their sex lives, but all details about their lives. At the end of each
erotic book, they read a letter written by one of the original members
which helps them rewrite their own stories.
This book was impossible to put down. The characters are
captivating! Each of the four women are so different from each other,
but we realize along the way why they were brought together in the
first place. The book club is not as much about erotic books as it is
about friendship. I absolutely adored this book and its engrossing story.
It is hilarious, heartbreaking and heartwarming all rolled into one. No
daffodils for this one, its 5 roses all the way. It’s the best book I’ve read
in a while, and you won’t want to miss this excellent read!
Until next time, read a book. If it’s a good read, pass it on!
