My Clearwater
Making a House a Home
The need for affordable housing
has received much attention in
recent years both locally and
nationally. While property prices
continue to rise, the city of Clearwater
has placed a priority on assisting
families to find quality affordable
housing.
The city's Economic Development and
Housing Department has worked with
community partners to address the issue
of affordable housing by investing funds
in rental and owner-occupied housing.
Funding for these projects is provided
by U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development, the state of
Florida and Pinellas County.
The city of Clearwater doesn't construct
housing on its own nor invest funds
that cover the entire cost of the project.
Rather, the city uses local, state and
federal dollars to leverage private
investment in affordable housing
projects by partnering with non-profit
and for-profit organizations and
developers. Since the beginning of
fiscal year 2017, the city has invested
grant and reinvestment money to
create 106 affordable residential units.
An additional 254 units are planned
in fiscal year 2019. In a typical year,
every dollar contributed by the city
to affordable housing development
projects leverages $8.10 in private
investment.
These are some of the housing projects
that are now home to many low- and
moderate-income Clearwater residents.
