Something in the Water
By Catherine Steadman
One day I overheard Alaina setting up the delivery of the May Beachcomber.
Yikes! That meant only one thing to me. I had a little over a week for my
next book review and I didn’t even have a book in mind. Nothing I’d read
lately qualified, so I got on the computer and went to my new favorite
reader’s website, Goodreads, and started my search. When I saw Something
in the Water I thought the title just screamed summer beach read. Right?
It didn’t matter what it was about, the title said it all. It was also a Reese
Witherspoon Book Club pick, so I figured it would be perfect. I wasn’t really
sure what Reese Witherspoon knew about books, but I thought I’d give her
pick a shot…
Erin is an up-and-coming documentary filmmaker and her soon-to-behusband
Mark is an investment banker in England (where else!). A few
weeks before their elaborate wedding, Mark loses his job, but they still plan
to have the honeymoon of their dreams and they’ll worry about that when
they return. So, off they head to a beautiful resort in Bora Bora.
One day while scuba diving, they find something in the water that starts
them on a downhill spiral of danger and greed that doesn’t seem to stop.
Erin and Mark have gotten themselves into a dangerous situation and
it’s tough to see how they are going to get out of it. And, about half way
through the book you remember the first chapter of the book and realize
their situation is probably going to end badly.
The other part of the story involves Erin’s documentary that she’s working
on, three criminals and their crimes, incarcerations, and soon-to-be
releases. Holli is an arsonist, Alexa helped her mother commit suicide, and
Eddie is a career mafiosa charged with money laundering. Each play a
pretty big part in Erin’s life, especially Eddie. The things he can do from
prison!
I’m not going to tell you what they find in the water, but I’m sure you’ve
figured out that it’s something of great value and that someone will do
anything to get it back. Thus starts the wild and dangerous journey that Erin
and Mark embark on to be able to hang on to their treasure. Sometimes I
just wanted to slap some sense into Erin to make her stop being so stupid.
She makes some really dumb decisions that are going to get them both
killed! How greedy can someone be?
Anyway, the ending was not at all what I suspected. The author really got
me! I give this book 5 roses. I could not put it down! I couldn’t wait to see
how it all ended. So, if you want a really good time while you’re sitting on
the beach under your umbrella, this book is for you. I loved it.
So, until next time, have a great summer and read a book. If it’s a good
read, pass it on!
