Beth Brown
Major, US Army (retired)
I enlisted in August 1974 as Private
First Class (PFC) and rose to the
rank of Staff Sergeant (E6, SSG).
I wanted to go into the Air Force
because I liked their uniforms, but
they did not have any openings. So
I chose to go into the Army Medical
Research. I had just graduated from college
with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. My first
duty assignment was at Presidio of San Francisco, Medical
Research Facility, Letterman Army Institute of Research. There
I published in Micro Biology, extending the life of blood bags.
I was a Vietnam Era and Desert Storm 1 Veteran. After serving
at the Presidio I received my commission as a Second Lieutenant
(2Lt) becoming what they call a Mustang (enlisted to
officer). My next duty assignment was 2D Hospital Center in
administration, logistics, and personnel. We were responsible
for 6000 troops and 18 units covering the western United
States during any conflict. My next duty assignment was in
Washington State at the 607th Medical Unit (a dental unit)
as Executive Officer (XO). It is
there that Desert Storm began.
We were responsible for processing
troops for transport to
the Middle East. When every other unit was sent over to the
Middle East, we were concerned we would be next. I told my
unit that until they saw my duffle bag packed and ready to
go they had nothing to worry about. (I had just moved and
didn’t know where my duffle bag was until a week before the
conflict ended.)
I retired as a highly decorated officer as a Major after 22 years
of service.
