GENERAL INFORMATION:
In what industry is your business?
Travel / hospitality
How and when did your business begin?
Began in July 2007, when we opened our doors
to our 1st guest at Bison Overlook Lodge.
What is your company’s mission? To welcome guests to
the ranch and enjoy the beauty of the mountains in Haywood
County and see God’s majestic animals, our bison herd. As well
as enjoy all the other animals we have: llamas, mini horses, mini
donkeys, goats, horses, alpacas, rabbits and a turkey!
How many employees does the business have? Two and
then all the business partners do their share.
Are you from Haywood County and if not, how long have
you been in Haywood County, NC? We are from Long
Island, NY. Our folks, Harold & Harriet Clackett retired here in
the early 1990’s & started the bison herd and built their 1st log
cabin. Out of all the business partners which include 4 out of
our 6 siblings and their spouses, 2 currently live in Haywood
County. That would be Joshua & Maggie Clackett along with
Jacob & Holly Clackett. Cheryl (myself) & Jeff Hillis will be here
as soon as he finishes out his military career at Ft. Bragg & the
last brother Tim & wife, Lisa Clackett can’t wait to get here but
are currently in NJ now on the 10-15 year plan.
What is it about your career that you are most
passionate about? I love meeting and talking w/guests &
hearing about their stay at the ranch and about their visit
around Haywood County. Love hearing what restaurants they
went to or what hikes they did.
What career accomplishment makes you the proudest?
After we opened the 1st Seaboard Coastline Caboose, we
were featured on Good Morning America as one of the
top 10 destinations around the world for being a “Unique
Destination”. We were thrilled when Clyde, NC was #10! Most
of the others were in England, Australia, CA or NY
What is it about this county that keeps you so involved
and inspired? I just love the feel of Waynesville & going
downtown. I personally don’t live here yet, but I’ve been
tearing up I-40 going back & forth to Pinehurst since moving
there with the military in 2016.
What were you doing prior to this career? I was a
children’s photographer & raising 4 boys as I followed my
husband’s Army career around.
