Local Schools deliver quality education
SERVING MORE THAN 2,900
students, the Union County
School System (UCSS) embodies a
reputation of excellence, while maintaining
a small-town feel. Consistently
ranked among the top school
districts in Georgia, UCSS was named
the #1 school system in the Northeast
Georgia Pioneer RESA for 2019.
As a charter school system, UCSS
reserves the opportunity to increase
innovation and flexibility within the
classroom and throughout the school
system. Administrators value the
importance of leadership development,
community partnerships and
classroom curriculum that contribute
to the 21st century economy.
Safety First
Under the leadership of Superintendent
John Hill, Union County Schools
formed a campus police department,
complete with a K-9 unit, to place
more emphasis on student safety.
School resource officers participate
in year-round safety planning and
implementation, conduct emergency

preparedness drills, and
facilitate the D.A.R.E. program to
encourage kids to say no to drugs.
The school police department
consistently travels with students
for field trips, off-site learning
opportunities and sporting events.
Officers also frequently speak to
students on topics such as 911 calls
and law enforcement careers.
Primary and Elementary
The youngest students (Pre-K-2nd)
thrive in the positive and safe learning
environment of Union County
Primary School. Headed by Principal
Millie Owenby, the school’s 675+
students are challenged to succeed
both academically and behaviorally.
Union County Elementary School
(3rd-5th) is committed to providing
every one of its 620+ students the
opportunity for success through
teaching, learning and caring. While
the main classroom focus revolves
around core subjects like math,
English, science and social studies,
students also participate in “specials”
that include art, music, Spanish and
physical education. Each child is
issued a Chrome book for classroom
use with access to Google classroom
for expanded educational
resources and greater collaboration
between the student and teacher.
Middle School
Union County Middle School students
deepen their knowledge in
core subjects, can take home their
Chromebooks to complete assignments
and become increasingly
independent learners. Student
activities and clubs become more
plentiful, along with opportunities
to participate in athletics, chorus
and drama. With an unyielding
commitment to excellence, Union
County educators recognize the
unique potential in each of the 660+
students and devote their time to
ensuring each student succeeds.
High School
Consistently rated one of the highest
performing schools in the state,
Union County High School provides
a rigorous curriculum to prepare its
830+ students for college, technical
school, the military or the workforce.
Through the CTAE (Career, Technical
and Agricultural Education) Pathways
program, students choose one
of 10 paths, taking courses that will
better prepare them for their chosen
