Up the Creek with a Paddle, a Tube …
Blairsville-Union County is a water-lover’s dream,
whether you love to fish, boat, swim or float. Start with
Lake Nottely, a gorgeous 4,180-acre lake with more than
half of its 106-mile shoreline undeveloped and protected
by the U.S. Forest Service. The TVA-controlled lake tends
to be quieter than other lakes in the mountains. It’s also
well known for fishing — striped bass, largemouth bass
and crappie are regularly stocked.
Looking for something a bit more intimate? Located
inside Vogel State Park, the 20-acre Lake Trahlyta is
named for a Cherokee Princess. You can bring your own
non-motorized boat or rent a kayak or paddleboat for a
few hours of fun. Swimming, camping, fishing, picnicking,
hiking, wildlife viewing, miniature golf, a playground
and rental cabins are also available.
Also check out 18-acre Lake Winfield Scott, located
south of Blairsville near the small town of Suches. Built by
the CCC in the 1930s, this quiet gem is open year- round
for beachgoers, swimmers, boaters, campers and hikers.

Start your wine tour at the 16-acre Odom Springs
Vineyards, sitting on land in western Union County
owned for more than a century by the Odom family. Odom
Springs specializes in French-American hybrid grapes,
and features a tasting room and on-site rental lodge.
The family-owned Paradise Hills Resort & Spa includes
a spa and cabin rentals, plus regular events and a wedding
venue. The 35-acre property was originally planted
in 2012 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Riesling,
Chardonel and other varietals.
For a tasty piece of history, visit Grandaddy Mimm’s
Distillery. Jack “Mimm” McClure (1914-1969) was an
Appalachian moonshiner. In 2012, country musician
Tommy Townsend, a grandson of McClure, began re creating
and marketing the original moonshine recipes
legally for the first time. The distillery now offers sales
and tours, plus occasional local concerts.
Head east from Blairsville and stop at Crane Creek
Vineyards in nearby Young Harris. This winery is proud
to offer more than 20 acres of vines planted in a variety
of grapes, from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin and
Vidal Blanc to Villard Noir, Norton and Catawba. Further
east is Hightower Creek Vineyards in Hiawassee, first
planted in 2009. This small 7-acre vineyard produces
wines that celebrate the unique tastes of North Georgia.
Go big in Blue Ridge with the four-generation family
owned and operated Mercier Orchards. Bill and Adele
Mercier started planting apple trees in 1943, and the
site has rapidly expanded into a bakery, cafe, U-pick,
farm market, winery and hard cider brewery. Tours,
tastings and sales are available year-round. In the fall,
get there early to beat the lines!
Not sure where to start with your wine tour? Learn
more about wines and food pairings beforehand with
a special event held by Traveling Vineyard.
