A Little
Historic Union County
Courthouse built in 1899.
Local History
Carved from Cherokee
territory, Union County was
created during the Georgia
Land Lottery of 1832. It was
likely named for the Union Party, a political group that supported re moving
Native Americans to open the area to white settlers.
Blairsville, the County seat, was incorporated in 1835 and named after Francis
Preston Blair, a supporter of Andrew Jackson and editor of the Washington
Globe. The Historic Courthouse in the Town Square was built in 1899, after the
first two burned down. It’s preserved and maintained by the Union County
Historical Society as a museum and event space; a new courthouse was built
nearby in 1976.
The County’s first paved road was completed in 1922. Around that time, the
United States began purchasing large amounts of land, consolidating it into what
would become the Chattahoochee National Forest. The Civilian Conservation
Corps in the 1930s built several structures still in use today, including Vogel State
Park, Lake Winfield Scott and the Walasi-Yi Interpretive Center on the Appalachian
Trail. Lake Nottely was created in the 1940s when the Nottely River was
dammed by the Tennessee Valley Authority. And Highway 515 was completed in
the late ’80s, providing for an easier drive to and from metro Atlanta.
