My Clearwater
Winter l Spring 03
Astunning new pavement mural came to fruition
this year in Clearwater as a neighborhood pitched
in to help continue the city’s dedication to art as
a way to solidify community spirit.
In November, the city of Clearwater’s Neighborhoods
Division co-sponsored a two-day placemaking event with the
painting of the mural on the intersection of Martin Luther
King Jr. Avenue and Woodlawn Street in the Lake Belleview
neighborhood.
Lead artist Kumpa Tawornprom and numerous volunteers
of all ages helped paint the mural called “Love, Harmony
and Peace,” with a design imagined in collaboration with the
community.
On the first day of the event, Tawornprom and volunteers
painted the outline of the mural, and the following day the
artist and volunteers brought the mural’s bright colors to life.
“I am honored that the mural will be part of this
community,” Tawornprom said.
The event, in collaboration with FYI Community
Partnerships Inc., Community Services Foundation, and the
Lake Belleview Neighbors group, was a huge success, said
Clearwater Neighborhoods Coordinator Jordan Morang.
“When the Lake Belleview Neighbors asked to be the first
community to paint an intersection, we were thrilled,”
Morang said. “This was a great opportunity for the
neighborhood to collaborate with an artist to create a piece
of public art reflective of their identity. This is a true piece of
community art.”
The project was the first Paint the Pavement event in the city
of Clearwater. The Paint the Pavement program is a part of
Clearwater’s Placemaking Playbook, which offers a variety of
community improvement programs for neighborhoods or
civic organizations.
