Healthy Choices
As we move into a new year, it is easy to look back
and wonder how we made it through all the
challenges of 2020. Now that it is behind us, it is
more important than ever to take control of the
areas of our lives in which action can lead to positive healthy
changes.
It is generally suggested that 80 percent of the things we
worry about are things over which we have no control. Let’s
strive to focus on the 20 percent we can control. Choice is
powerful; it’s a key element in improving one’s health and
sense of wellbeing. It is empowering to realize we can choose
to take positive actions and ignore the distractions of what
we can’t control.
Here are some simple tasks you can start doing right now
to help regain the power of choice. Keep in mind these are
simple, not easy. The first thing to do is to sit down with a
pad of paper, and make a list of all the stressors and issues
over which you have no control. Then, do the same with
what you can control. By doing this, you will gain the ability
to identify where your focus and actions need to be.

The next tip is to eliminate words such as, “try, should,
could, need, maybe,” or others like these. Words like these
strip away your power to choose and put the decision to do
something positive on external factors, leading to making an
excuse. Replace them with words such as “will, won’t, choose
to” or “choose not to.” These are far more decisive and give
the power of choice back to you. Putting this into practice
can be challenging, and it is a great place to start to improve
your sense of wellbeing.
Last but not least, you have access to a number of great
resources. From a physical activity perspective, there are
beautiful Clearwater recreation centers available to you for as
little as $7 annually, beautiful parks and trails to visit, and of
course Clearwater Beach.
Being well is a choice. External factors do play a role, but
choose not to let them be the determining factor in your
being the best you in 2021. Stay safe and be well.
