DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURE BY TRANSPORTATION PERSONNEL
Student Management Introduction
The conduct of students on a school bus has a direct relationship to their safety. Drivers should take the position that no
act or conduct that distracts him/her from safely operating the school bus will be condoned or tolerated. Swift and firm action must
be taken by the driver to solve and correct any problems.
The attitude toward the job and toward the students is critical. Drivers must realize that it is more important to be respected
by the students than liked by them. Students can and will conform to rules and regulations which are fairly, firmly, and consistently
enforced.
Prompt attention to the small problems in a fair and consistent manner will keep them from becoming a major concern.
With the implementation of the new School Bus Disciplinary Reporting System, it is imperative that you follow the below
listed recommendations for student management.
1. Be fair, firm, and consistent with all students on your bus. Treat the students with respect and in a manner that you
would wish your own child to be treated.
2. Warning: warn the student that their behavior is unacceptable & explain how to correct it.
3. Seat reassignment: if warning fails, seat reassignment may be utilized as the next step.
4. Parent Contact: if warnings and seat assignment fail, then a parent contact by you may be beneficial in correcting the
problem.
a. Be courteous when you talk to the parent; you are the PROFESSIONAL.
b. Explain the problems that you are having with their child on the bus.
c. Ask them if they have any suggestions to help you with their child.
d. End the conversation with a positive statement about their child.
5. School Bus Disciplinary Report: The new report is based on a graduated discipline scale. Drivers should make every
reasonable effort to implement a good student management plan prior to initiating a written report.
Reminder: All drivers are to follow the written guidelines that constitute a violation. Under no circumstances shall a
driver substitute his/her own violations for those violations that have been established. Note: Driver shall report student to the
principal of the school which that student attends. If students from more than one school are involved, the principals will confer
to assure consistency in discipline.
