Hazel Moore
has spent over
forty (40)
years as a
cosmetology
professional
and licensed
instructor.
She is a
successful
business women
and the sole
proprietor of
Hazel’s Hair Fashion. As a trailblazer in the beauty
industry, she was appointed by three
Governors of the State of Tennessee to the State
Board of Cosmetology to assist in regulating
state laws.
Under Hazel’s leadership, the Memphis
Beautician Association sponsored a Curl-A-Thon
to raise funds to benet LeMoyne-Owen College
as well as other fundraising activities to provide
scholarships for deserving young students.
Additionally, she played a key role in establishing
thet Beauty Pageant for the Tennessee
Beautician Association.
As the General Chairperson of the Tennessee
Beauty Trade Show, she was instrumental in
organizing thet Tennessee Beautician Trade
Show. During that time, Hazel discovered
the barriers that prohibited women from being
recognized as successful entrepreneurs. She
has represented endurance in theeld and has
overcome signicant obstacles. Hazel used her
lessons learned experiences along the way to
benet other entrepreneurs.
In her quest to improve the community and
with increasing demands for youth to be
exposed to innovative opportunities to secure
a strong foundation and to achieve personal
success, she established a group for mentoring
young ladies. Most were from single parent households,
which amplied the need to educate and
provide a support system. In collaboration with the
Department of Children’s Services and State
Representatives, she implemented a
“Mom for a Weekend” program targeting
young girls ages 10 to 16 with a concentration
on at-risk teen pregnancy. Over the years,
she has acted as a coach and mentor to young
ladies faced with challenges providing assistance
and enabling them to forge ahead in life by
providing scholarships to further their
education.
Affectionately known as “the Mayor of
Whitehaven”, that was not a title that was just
given to Hazel, it was one she earned over the
years for being an active force for the people in the
area. City Leaders are keenly aware in order to make
things happen in the Whitehaven community they
must garner her support. Hazel has achieved
an unparallel reputation for community service.
Being well connected to the community, she is often
requested by City Leaders to participate in strategic
planning meetings to address problems, projects,
programs and initiatives that impact the community.
Armed with passion, energy and drive, she played a
pivotal role in the construction of the Whitehaven
Branch Library.
Due to her dedication and desire to better her
community, in 1993, she founded the Academy for
Youth Empowerment. The organization’s mission is
founded on the belief that all youth are capable of
achieving their full potential if the social, cultural,
and legal barriers to their success are recognized and
addressed. Below are several key initiatives that bear
the footprint of Hazel Moore servant leadership to
encourage and support a positive change in the
community.
Since 1993, annual Youth Leadership Seminars
have been designed to develop and cultivate youth to
become leaders, to choose positive lifestyles and to
make wise decisions. For the past twenty-one years,
she has sponsored a “Back-to-School Health Fair”.
Over the past twenty-two years, she has sponsored
an Annual Holiday Festival Parade. This event has
grown each year making history in 2009 gaining
approval to block Elvis Presley Boulevard. Hazel
believes this event will help the efforts for a crime
free community, increased economic development
and a healthy environment for our children.
Due to Hazel’s commitment and active involvement
in numerous service projects that have aided in the
betterment of mankind and the community, she has
received a myriad of awards and accolades.
Hazel Moore has devoted most of her life to serving
and improving the lives of individuals in the
community which represents her SPIRIT of caring,
sharing and generosity. She will leave a legacy of
selessly giving her service to improve the quality
of life in the Memphis community seeing beyond
her own needs. It takes people like Hazel Moore,
working community by community to make our
entire city great. Those whose lives she’s touched
through her mentoring and personal outreach
will pay off in the years to come.
