IDA B. WELLS STATUE AND PLAZA
UNVEILED ON HER BIRTHDAY
JULY 16, 2021
Born July 16, 1882, the City of Memphis welcomed back the spirit of
Ida B. Wells, a crusader for justice, by unveiling a life-size statue and
plaza in honor of Wells’ legacy on July 16, 2021 at the corner of 4th
and Beale in Memphis, TN. Silenced no more, Ida B. Wells has a
permanent place in Memphis where she found her voice as a journalist
in the 1880’s taking a stand against lynchings and racial injustices
in the same City that did not respect her work. Because of her
outspokeness and willingness to challenge the power structure,
she was exiled from Memphis almost 130 years ago.
