FISHING FOR A SOLUTION
TO JOINT PAIN?
“As a professional sherman of over 2 years, I shed and
practiced casting up to 9 hours a day,” says Gil Johnson. “I
started feeling the pain in my shoulder about two years ago.
I thought over-the-counter pain killers would take care of
it, but the pain was too intense. Over time, the pain became
unbearable and I couldn’t lift my arm very high. That’s when
I decided to make an appointment with Dr. Frix.”
Gil discussed his concerns about his shoulder with
orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mitch Frix. After an examination and
diagnostic imaging, Dr. Frix recommended that Gil undergo
reverse total shoulder replacement.
A regular total shoulder replacement implant is comparable
to the natural anatomy of the shoulder. However, with
a reverse total shoulder replacement, the position of
the socket and ball are switched. Reverse total shoulder
replacement has been proven effective for those who suffer
from both shoulder arthritis and a rotator cuff tear.
Gil asked Dr. Frix some questions about the surgery and did
research online as well. After discussing it with his wife, he
decided to schedule the surgery.
“I was relieved that I would soon be free of the pain,” says
Gil. “As an added benet, the total shoulder replacement
would be an outpatient surgery, so I wouldn’t have to spend
the night in the hospital.”
