“Take care of yourself,” says Mary. “I was the least likely
candidate to have breast cancer. I don’t have a family history
of breast cancer, I didn’t ��nd a lump, and I was just 41 years
old when I was diagnosed. I wouldn’t want to think about
what would have happened if my cancer wasn’t found at
such an early stage.”
At Hamilton Diagnostics Center, 3D mammography is
available to all patients for screening and diagnostic
mammograms. 3D mammography allows radiologists to
identify abnormalities at earlier stages. This technology has
allowed for a 41% increase in invasive cancer detections.1

“I don’t have a family history of breast cancer, says Mary
McLawhorn. “So, I was very surprised to learn that there
was a cause for concern after I received my routine 3D
screening mammogram.”
Mary was asked to come back to Hamilton Diagnostics
Center for a second mammogram. “When I had the
diagnostic mammogram, the radiologist reviewed it while I
was there.” Patrick Minor, MD, told Mary that to be safe, he
was going to refer her to Eric Manahan, MD, of Hamilton
Physician Group-General Surgery. Unfortunately, the
biopsy that Dr. Manahan performed revealed that Mary had
breast cancer.
Mary’s breast cancer was discovered at stage zero, which
means that it had not spread to other cells. There were no
lumps and no symptoms. The only way that breast cancer
can be found at this stage is through a mammogram.
Dr. Manahan removed the cancerous cells from Mary’s
breast at Hamilton Ambulatory Surgery Center. Then she
received radiation at Hamilton Cancer Institute.
Mary was able to continue working as a ��rst grade teacher at
Antioch Elementary during her treatment. She also directed
a play at the Artistic Civic Theater in Dalton.
