BACK PAIN
By Deborah Karlan, L.M.T.
BACK PAIN IS ONE OF THE
most frequent complaints and the
most common reason for visits
to my office for therapeutic massage.
Symptoms may include: muscle aches,
shooting or stabbing pain, pain that
radiates down your leg, or limited
flexibility.
After working out, Sam came to me
with back pain and muscle spasms. I
checked both his standing and reclining
posture. He had an imbalance with
spasms in his right front hip muscles
and along his left back muscles. I began
treatment by releasing the other side of
his back pain, psoas, and iliac muscles,
which attach to the front side of the
spine and in many cases contribute to
back pain.
I released the muscle spasms along
the right front, and then the spasms and
trigger points in the neck and shoulders.
I was now ready to work on the back
side of the problem. After doing a good
job on the front side, the back is usually
easy to release. On the back side, I
started with myofacial release, then
ice and stretches to eliminate trigger
points; after which I worked out the
spasms. I finished with good flushing
strokes to release the remaining tension
in the muscles. With some final active
facilitated stretching, Sam was as good
as new. So, for back pain relief, be sure
that your therapist works both sides of
your problem. You will have a speedier,
more lasting recovery.

A BEAUTIFUL
NEW YEAR
By
If you're anything like me, you
enjoy people-watching. While at the
airport recently, I overheard a man
ask his female companion how she
would like him to wear his hair. I got
a good laugh, as he was not in full
agreement with some of her ideas.
Later, after boarding my plane, I
overheard three women discussing
the new hairstyle one of them had
gotten and really liked. The conversation
went on with all three of them
about what they loved and hated
regarding their current hair styles.
Hearing the topic of both conversations
in less than an hour got me
thinking. I feel so lucky that, in my
profession, I have the opportunity to
make people look and feel better
about themselves with new styles
and looks. I love what I do, because
seeing others being happy and
confident brings me the greatest
reward and enjoyment.
As we close out 2014 and begin a
New Year, let's all try to focus on how
blessed we are, and make time to
help others who aren't as fortunate.
Find a way to share your blessings
with others. Wishing all of you a
happy holiday season and many
blessings in 2015!
