points. I told him, ‘I think it
lightens up at the end of your
schedule.’ Well, it didn’t. He
may have won one game up
here. The next year, he called me
up and said, ‘Now, the schedule
doesn’t need to be as tough as I
had last year,’ and I said, ‘OK.’”
Learning Loyalty
In addition to mannerisms
and tactics, Odom said Worrell
taught her something even
more important.
“He taught me loyalty,”
Odom said. “No matter what
we did as coaches, we always
had our players in the forefront.
We did everything we thought
was best for the team.”
Odom added, “That taught
me when I was a head coach
that I knew what kind of assistant
I was looking for. You have
to make a lot of quick decisions,
and you don’t always make the
right ones. But you need people
beside you that are going to
stand behind you. He taught
me to do that with him, and it
carried over with me and that
staff that I put together.”
Predicting Success
Even before Worrell and Odom
dove into their head coaching
careers, they each knew the other
would fare well on the sidelines.
“I knew he was going to be
successful at Tech,” Odom said
of Worrell.
Worrell concurred regarding
Odom, “She had it when
she was at Tech. She had that
burning desire that you could
see. A lot of times, coaching is
just not for everybody. But I
could see she was going to be a
great coach.”
Nearly 1,000 combined victories
later, both Worrell’s and
Odom’s intuitions turned out to
be right.
