MOVIE
REVIEW
By Alaina Loughridge
THE POST
What a delight to go to the Tybee Post
Theater and pay $7 for a ticket to see a
movie that hasn’t even been made into
a Blu Ray yet! Then (and the best part)
proceed to the bar and order a glass of
wine and a box of popcorn all for under
$9!! I am so happy the Post Theater is
showing movies for us crazies that get
nervous crossing the bridge. Not to mention now that the Frank Theaters
has closed on Victory, we would have to travel all the way to Eisenhower
(oh, hell no!!!). Anyway, I digress from my point.
Mac, Margie and I ventured out on a lovely Friday evening to go see
Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in an Oscar nominated movie The Post.
Based on a true story, Meryl (playing Kay Graham) has inherited The
Washington Post through her family and is just doing the best she can.
She has hired Tom (playing Ben Bradlee) as her right-hand man to be her
editor, much to the distress of her Board of Directors. I am going to cut
to the chase right here.
The first hour of this movie was so dull I was trying to figure out how
to escape with no one knowing I had left (damn you Margie for picking
center seating and me all trapped in the middle). However, you have to
get through that first part to get to the sitting up in your seat part!
Top secret documents that placed the last four presidents all in the
know about how Vietnam was unwinnable, but to save face the war must
go on, were released to The Times. The Times got a few issues off before
the government shut them down.
Here is where it got good! In those times, women had their place and
were reminded daily of where they belonged. Kay Graham stood up for
freedom of the press at the potential of literally losing everything. All of
her staff would have been jobless and on top of that, the potential of a
prison sentence was hanging over her head if she defied the government.
Just go watch it! Do not drink heavily as you will not be able to track
the intricacies of what’s going on. Don’t go to the bathroom either unless
you can pause it. No one but Meryl and Tom could have pulled this one
hour and five-minute yawner off with the last 30 minutes of “oh hell
yeah.” Oscar winner – no. Woman empowerment winner – absolutely!!
It reminds us of how far we have come in a variety of areas: women,
media (in both good and bad ways), government, and what people will
do to save face or obliterate it.
I give this movie 2 bottles of Smirnoff (the message is good and
remembering our history is important), 2 bottles of Titos (one for Meryl
and one for Tom) and 1 bottle of Leon Verres’ Billionaire Vodka at a
mere 7.25 million dollars per bottle. That bottle goes to Ted Lynch at
Accountants on Tybee and here is why: As we were waiting for our taxi to
arrive after the movie, a strange man with a hoodie (hood up) appeared
with a little dog and proceeded to walk behind the theater. He stopped.
Looked at me and said, “Hey Alaina. I’ve done your taxes and you are
getting money back.” He then proceeded to walk into the mist. Thank
God I had witnesses!!! Love you Accountants on Tybee!!!
