Behind the Tape…
By Cpl. Richard Dascall
Welcome to summer everybody. Hope the off season was nice and relaxing
for everyone. As I’m sure all of you have noticed, the spring breakers are
rolling in and the beaches are getting packed. We’re at the point in the year
where the traffic is starting to back up and people are getting a little crazy
behind the wheel.
As I’m sure all of you reading this have noticed, there’s a big interview
piece with our Police Chief in this month’s issue. Chief Bryson took over the
department about two months after I had started working here. Since then we
have seen some large steps forward in our department. Everything from
expanding the number of officers we have working on a shift, to equipping
every one of our officers with body cameras. Beyond that, he has gone out of
his way to maintain an open door policy with all of his employees, even
knowing that all we do is complain and interrupt him from actual work.
I’m sure everybody was able to enjoy the Irish Heritage Parade, but now
that it’s behind us, we’re looking forward to the next big thing, Orange Crush.
I’m sure at this point everybody has heard of it, if not just go on YouTube. I can
tell you, that as always, we’re getting ready for it on our end. To this point
we’ve had a very good track record with handling this event, and we don’t
anticipate anything different this year. This is always the event that gains the
most community concern, and we want to do what we can to alleviate that, so
if you’re not already, follow our department Facebook page to keep up with
any updates we have about the event. Beyond that, as always, let us know if
there’s anything we can do to help you and hopefully everyone has a great
summer.
So I may have lived on Tybee for a minute, but that doesn’t mean one
knows everything going on here. My goodness, I learn something new
every day. Today I learned that the Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion
Post 154 is freaking awesome! They have partnered with the Savannah
Adopt-a-Soldier group. Our Ladies Auxiliary sends gift packages to our
troops overseas every three months. Spearheaded by Wanda Doyle, these
ladies gather together items that helps make our soldier’s lives better.
So you’re in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Korea, middle of nowhere that
we want to be, and you need stuff. The middle of the desert cannot be a
good time and I don’t care who you are. You need stuff: Chapstick, lotion,
accoutrements that, if won’t make life better, will at least make it tolerable.
I know if I was in the middle of anywhere there, I would want some stuff. I
had an opportunity to sit down with Wanda to get the scoop…
Every three months, the Ladies Auxiliary sends care packages. The USPS
(bless their hearts) provides the boxes. There is a cost for shipping, but it
is discounted and they do not weigh the boxes sent. We are pushing for a
huge shipment in June. Let’s get together and do this. You know you have
a couple of bucks in your pocket so pony up. This is what they need:
Sports Illustrated, Fishing, Guns, People, Cosmo, Elle, Tybee
Beachcomber
Not the cheap crap. You are dealing with over 100 degrees. Get
Lubriderm
Protein bars, granola bars, cookies and candies (NO
CHOCOLATE – it melts y’all)
Ladies, it is what it is. We need tampons and pads.
We also need toothpaste, GOOD razors, toothbrushes, etc. Don’t send
something you would not use yourself. Think of dry, arid conditions. Skin
gets chapped and sensitive. Please do not include ‘trial’ size items. That
stuff is typically crap and it doesn’t help.
It doesn’t have to be epic. I will start
you off: Hi, my name is Alaina and I want you to know I really appreciate
everything you are doing for our country. I live on Tybee Island in southeast
Georgia. Tybee is a terrific place and you really should come visit and bring
your family and friends. I will buy you many beers.
See? Easy. Now go get some items and drop it off at the Legion after 5pm.
If you have any questions about what, where and when, call Wanda Doyle
at 912-667-9844. Please remember if it weren’t for them …
