Remember when keeping up with new diet trends was easy? There would
only be a new one every other year or so. All I remember growing up is the
Atkins Diet. How happy were the simple foodie Men of ‘Merica? Finally, all
they ever wanted was to be told that meat ‘n potatoes would cause weight
loss. And although Dr. Atkins tragically and ironically lost his life to a heart
attack, parts of his work still lives in hipper, posher sounding diets. I’m
sure you’ve heard some of these buzz words around the office, gym, or
the dreaded family event. Diets like Paleo, Keto, The Whole 30, 21 Day Fix,
Gluten Free, Vegan, Macrobiotic, and the list goes on and on. The worst is
when you actually meet someone on them. No, the worst is when you meet
someone who is on a diet who just started within 5 days. Just tell them you
have explosive diarrhea and get outta that conversation! You can recognize
these people by: they have a sad longing look in their eye for pizza, you
can actually hear their stomach grumbling, and they will snap at you faster
than a turtle going after Granny’s big toe. Just walk away.
You don’t need to ask a hungry person what’s for lunch. Here are some of
the 2018 diet downloads:
PALEO - Short for: oh hell, no. Humans evolve for 2.6 million years and
the Paleolithic diet wants to make America great again? The Paleo diet
requires the consumption of food that would have been available to our
ancestors during the Paleolithic era. I’m confused immediately. Who is this
mysterious person who found a prehistoric recipe book from your great,
great, great (x 2.5 million) Granny?
PROS: Tons of lean protein and fresh veggies
CONS: Bye-bye cheese & alcohol
This is a relatively newer term
for me but the Ketogenic Diet has been around since the 1920’s. Its basis
is high fat, medium protein, and low carb. Originally developed to help
children fight epilepsy, it’s increased in popularity, probably because you
can still cook with butta’ and I can sneak in a block of cheese or 2. Not
sure how I feel about the long term health benefits but I’m not complaining.
PRO: I’ve made that obvious already
CON: A decent amount of meal prep and food education
DASH - Short for: Will I be dashing to the bathroom? No, but you
will be dashing to Amazon.Com to buy your new blood pressure monitor
because dash was originally designed for lowering blood pressure. We
got one, it’s my new favorite party trick. Whoever has the highest blood
pressure has to take a shot unless it’s in the red, then we’ll drive you to the
ER. Then make you eat the Dash Diet. On the opposite spectrum of Keto,
the Dash promotes lots of fruits and veggies and low to no fat intake. I like
the dash because you can still eat whole grains, nuts, and beans which
most diets say are too much carbs.
PRO: Lots and Lots of real, healthy food, despite the carb intake
CON: No sour cream on your multigrain taco
Since there are countless and countless diets and trends happening at
any given point, the only advice I can offer is to eat lots of fruits and green
veggies and add your lean protein in. Educate yourself on what companies
add to your food and avoid what you know your body doesn’t like. Enjoy
your slice of pizza and beer occasionally and ride your bike. Breathe deep
and don’t sweat the small stuff! P.S I’m not a doctor

If you are not aware of the formal approval by FEMA, of the new
Tybee flood maps, they become effective in mid-August of this year. If
you would like to know how the new maps affect your property, contact
George Shaw at City Hall at 786-4573. You can also go to sagis.maps.
arcgis.com and click on “Find My Flood Zone.” These new maps could
reduce your flood insurance premiums or minimize future increases.
The North Beach area renourishment project should be complete
when this edition of the Beachcomber is published. This project was
funded primarily by county SPLOST and federal funds (combined 97%),
with an additional contribution from the City of Tybee (3%). The total
project cost was about $4.8 million. Many thanks to our representatives
at the federal level and with the Chatham County Commission for their
support of this important project. The project was intended to repair
damage from Hurricane Matthew.
The State budget approved recently by the legislature and signed by
Governor Deal included $10 million for beach renourishment projects
statewide. We are optimistic that we will be successful in applying
these funds to a larger renourishment and dune-building project in
the next few years. Our State Representative, Jesse Petrea, and State
Senator, Ben Watson, were instrumental in ensuring these funds were
put into the State’s budget. If you would like more details about these
efforts, feel free to shoot me an email or give me a call. You are also
welcome to attend monthly meetings of the Tybee Island Beach Task
Force. Our Clerk of Council, Jan Leviner, can provide you with their
meeting schedule. She can be reached at 786.4573.
You may have noticed that the reflectors placed on the Bull River
Bridge were damaged recently. This was the result of the ice removal
efforts associated with the winter weather we had in early January. The
reflectors will be replaced soon. Similar ones will also be added to the
Lazaretto Creek Bridge. The reflectors are part of the State’s efforts to
provide safety improvements prior to the ultimate replacement of both
bridges.
You also may have noticed the flags being placed along the
causeway. These were placed there as part of the bridge replacement
and causeway widening that is moving forward slowly but surely. Many
of us, myself included, have lobbied hard for a four lane fix. I have met
multiple times with the Governor and our Congressman and Senators,
begging for a four lane solution. However, as I am sure you know, the
Georgia Department of Transportation plans do not call for four lanes
as part of their bridge replacement and causeway widening plans. The
reasons we are given are that the traffic counts do not justify four lanes
and the permitting process would take decades. Again, I disagree. But
it is out of our City limits, it is a State and Federal road and is on land
owned by the Federal government. I can only tell you we have done and
continue to do all we can to make sure the project is sufficient for our
Island’s needs and that improvements are made as soon as possible.
As the busy season approaches, if you have any suggestions for
improvement for our Island or any questions, feel free to call me on my
cell at 912.844.8427 or send me an email at jbuelterman@cityoftybee.
org.
I will be giving a State of the City at the Post Theatre at 7:00 pm
on April 5th. The public is invited to attend and there is no admission
charge. Thanks and have a great April.
