S itting high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River on land that once
belonged to the Chicasaw tribe of Native Americans, the city of Memphis
grew into a successful cotton trading center in the southwest corner of
the state of Tennessee after beginning as a real estate development in
1819. When Elvis Presley was discovered in the early 1950s, Memphis became
known more for its music than for anything else. That music, however, is
