Lorraine Motel.
Our tour of Memphis began with a visit
to Graceland, Elvis’ home, which opened
to the public in 1982. Since then, more than
20 million people have visited this mansion
that was built by a doctor in 1939 and was
purchased by Elvis in 1957 for $102,500.
The only house to get more visitors a
year than Graceland is the White House in
Washington, D.C. Last year, the Graceland
experience was expanded with the opening
of a 200,000-square-foot entertainment and
exhibition complex, Elvis Presley’s Memphis.
Thousands of Presley’s artifacts of the more
than 1.5 million that the Graceland Archives
maintains are on display. You can see his
