AND BUCKET LIST
TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | JUNE 2018 9
6. Deep sea fishing! There are a lot of options out there, but my go-to is
Big Fish Charters with Captain Nick! That man truly is the Fish Whisperer
and he can tell you what is on your hook by the way your pole bobbed in the
water! Creepy, but true! Captain Nick and his first mate will happily clean
your fish once back at the dock, and for $9.95 a person you can walk into
Bubba Gumbos and they’ll cook your fish up (grilled, blackened, or fried) with
two sides! Perfect end to a perfect day on the water! Call 912-230-4625.
7. Fort Pulaski. We are a historical site here. Savannah has been
smuggling, gun running and fighting wars since way before you were born.
Go check it out and get some history for the benefit of your entire family.
This structure is incredible, built with primitive techniques, and this fort has
survived hurricanes, floods, tornados, and the Civil War (kind of). Located US
Hwy 80.
8. Beach walks with Dr. Joe. They say we know more about outer space
than our own oceans, but after taking a stroll with this man you can deny
that statement! Dr. Joe is a world of knowledge, from tracks in the sand,
shells, and entire eco systems living in tidal pools. You’re sure to walk away
with a new outlook on the beach! Call him @912-596-5362.
9. Rent a golf cart and tour the island. There’s nothing better than
cruising Tybee, enjoying the palm trees, the cozy beach cottages, and the
fresh air. And there’s not a better way to do it than in an open-air golf cart.
Just stay off the main road, and you can safely move around the island while
having fun too! Tybee Golf Carts located at 801 1st St.
10. Take a surf lesson from Turner Horton at Tybee Surf Lessons. Having
learned to surf myself, I can tell you it’s actually easier than it looks. I’m not
saying it’s the simplest hobby out there, but the first time you stand up on
that board and ride a wave, you’ll be hooked! What a great experience!!!
Hang ten!!! (808-385-5364)
11. Farmer’s Market at the Lighthouse (every Monday 4-7pm). This is a
definite must check out, from local produce and Tybee Honey, to ho’made
pies, sauces, crafts, and more. This is a great way to meet some locals and
get the scoop on the island. Located at 30 Meddin Dr.
12. Go to the Tybee Post Theater. They offer such a variety – from live
music to movies! Did I mention they also have a bar? Catch a friendly game
show competition between two local businesses or a comedy show. The
calendar is always booked at the Post, be sure to check it out and get your
tickets ahead of time. Located at 10 Van Horn Ave.
Enjoy your Tybee Time while you’re here … and remember to leave only
your footprints.
