By Nell Klein
The woman
in the
window
By A. J. Finn
Agoraphobia, among other things, is a fear of being outside the
home. The most severely afflicted are suffering from post-traumatic
stress disorder and are housebound, hidden from the world outside, as
is Anna Fox. Dr. Anna Fox.
Anna is a child psychologist who hasn’t left her house in 11
months. She spends her days watching the world from her four-story
house in New York and watching old movies. She’s also involved with
others suffering from her condition on a website called the Agora. Her
prescriptions, food and wine (lots of wine) are delivered to her door. Her
doctor and therapist make house calls. She also has a tenant who lives
in her basement who helps with odd jobs. Anna is well taken care of,
thanks to her husband Ed, who she is separated from.
Anna knows the ins and outs of all of her neighbor’s lives - when
everyone leaves for work, when everyone comes home, and even who’s
having an affair. She becomes particularly interested in a new family,
Alistair and Jane Russell and their son, Ethan. She becomes friendly
with Jane when she comes for a visit and they spend the day together
getting to know each other and drinking wine (lots of wine).
All is well until Anna sees something from her window one night that
threatens to change everything.
The police can’t find any substance to her story. She’s told that she’s
imagining things. What she saw didn’t really happen. She drank too
much wine and was reliving one of her old Hitchcock movies. Anna
thinks that maybe they are right and that she is going crazy. But then
again, she saw what she saw, dammit! But how is she going to prove it?
The book also has some pretty shocking revelations that will make you
sit up and say, “Whoa, I didn’t see that coming!”
This is an incredible first novel by A.J. Finn, whom I believe is
destined for greatness (google his picture, he’s a cutie pie!). The title of
the book reminded me of The Girl on the Train and the book itself had a
similar theme: girl drinks too much; girl sees something terrible; nobody
believes girl. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a major motion picture made
from this amazing book. This is a definite 5 rose read, case closed.
So, until next time, read a book. If it’s a good read, pass it on!
