TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | JUNE 2018 31
The guys head back towards Tybee Island, slipping between
Tybee and Little Tybee. As they’re passing through, Garrett notices
flashing lights at the Alley 3 boat ramp, points to it, and says, “What
the hell is that, Nick man?”
“Looks like an ambulance. I hope nothing happened to anyone
camping on Little Tybee tonight. I heard Becky was heading over
there with Nate and Tony for a few days.”
“I think Crabber Brian and Jay took a few people over yesterday.”
“Well, if Brian is over there, there’s no telling what happened.
Trouble finds him even on deserted islands.”
“HA!” Garrett bellows. “You got that right, brother man.”
“Let’s get a little closer to the beach,” Nick says as his gaze
moves over the scene. “I don’t see any Coast Guard around. Maybe
they need some help.”
“Pull up to the right of the ramp and I’ll hop off the bow and push
you back out.”
Garrett safely dismounts and heads over to the ramp. The
ambulance has one back door slightly askew and the engine is
running. He opens the back door and takes in the view of the white
interior painted in blood. He steps back slowly and notices blood
is sprayed everywhere on the concrete around him. He turns and
runs back toward the boat and shouts, “Nick! Come pick me up!
Something is VERY wrong here.”
“I got you man!” Nick says and noses the boat back to the ramp
so Garrett can board again.
Once aboard Garrett tries to explain what he saw to Nick. “Dude!
There’s blood everywhere! The inside of the ambulance is covered
and it’s all over the ramp!”
“Where are the EMTs?”
“That’s the crazy thing. There’s no one around. Just a bloody
empty ambulance.”
Nick tosses Garrett his phone and says, “Call 911.”
Garrett dials and shakes his head. “It’s saying some shit about
heavy volume and to try again later.”
“WHAT?”
“Yeah, Nick man. I can’t get through on 911.”
“Try TIPD.”
“I did, man. It’s going to voicemail.”
“This is jacked up. Let’s get this boat to the dock. I’ve got a really
bad feeling about this.”
“You don’t say?”
They make their way back to the dock, Nick eases the boat up
beside it, and Garrett instinctively jumps off the boat and onto the
dock to tie the bow line. As he’s doing that he hears Nick say, “Is
that Shakey?”
Garrett looks up and sees an old man sprinting toward them from
the Bubba Gumbo’s ramp. “Damn Shakey, I didn’t know you could
run that fast, brother.” Shakey launches toward Garrett and latches
onto his neck. In one swift movement, Shakey rips a huge chunk of
flesh from Garrett’s neck and blood spews from the hole that is left
behind.
“WHAT THE HELL SHAKEY!” Nick screams.
As soon as the words leave Nick’s throat, Shakey turns toward
Nick, snarls, and leaps aboard the boat.
