Important Dates in History:
July 1, 1863 - Beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg during the American
Civil War.
July 19, 1863 - During the American Civil War, Union troops made a second
attempt to capture Fort Wagner near Charleston, South Carolina. The attack
was led by the 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry, commanded by Colonel
Robert Gould Shaw, who was killed along with half of the 600 men in the
regiment. This battle marked the first use of black Union troops in the war.
July 24, 1943 - During World War II in Europe, the Royal Air Force conducted
Operation Gomorrah, raiding Hamburg, while tossing bales of aluminum foil
strips overboard to cause German radar screens to see a blizzard of false
echoes. As a result, only twelve of 791 Allied bombers involved were shot
down.
July 16, 1945 - The experimental Atomic bomb “Fat Boy” was set off at
5:30am in the desert of New Mexico, creating a mushroom cloud rising
41,000 ft. The bomb emitted heat three times the temperature of the interior
of the sun and wiped out all plant and animal life within a mile.
July 24, 1945 - At the conclusion of the Potsdam Conference in Germany,
Winston Churchill, Harry Truman and China’s representatives issued a
demand for unconditional Japanese surrender. The Japanese, unaware
the demand was backed up by an Atomic bomb, rejected the Potsdam
Declaration on July 26.
July 27, 1953 - The Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice by
U.S. and North Korean delegates at Panmunjom, Korea. The war had lasted
just over three years.
Hey there everybody! Hope all of you are having a nice summer. It
took a while to get here, but now it’s hot enough to cook an egg on the
sidewalk, so make sure you drink some water when you’re out and
about. First off let me apologize for missing last month’s article. As I’m
sure everyone can relate to, life gets hectic sometimes and things fall
through the cracks. So, I’m sorry I missed you guys but I’m happy to be
back strong this month.
To start with, several of us went to Police Week in Washington D.C.
during the month of May. While I understand it’s probably not everyone’s
idea of a family vacation, it was something amazing to see. If you ever
find yourself with a group of cop friends who ask you to go, it really is
an enjoyable time. I would absolutely make the trip again.
But besides that, here we are with the summer just cranking away.
Beach Bum came and went, and the crowds didn’t seem nearly as large
as they have in the past. I attribute most of that to the questionable
weather this year, but none the less, it seems like everyone who
attended had a good time. On our end, the whole event went very
smoothly. In years past I can remember some very serious crimes taking
place at this event, but this year we were able to make it through
without anything more than the stuff we would see on a normal
weekend.
But in typical fashion, it’s always on a Thursday at about 2 in the
afternoon that we see our problems. Just a couple of weeks ago, while I
was working on the beach, I was stopped by Ocean Rescue about a
group of people. Apparently they had been fighting with each other and
making things uncomfortable for the other beach goers. My partner and
I went to talk to these people, where we found four very drunk people.
Besides how they were acting, the two empty bottles of Southern
Comfort were what we in police work call a clue. Having dealt with this
same situation at least a hundred times, I was almost positive this was
going to end with these people in handcuffs. But surprisingly, they didn’t
even try to argue when we told them it was time to leave. And as these
drunk rednecks struggled to carry their styrofoam cooler off the beach,
that was the first time I had ever received an applause for my work.
As some of you might have noticed, there are some new colorful
signs at all the beach entrances. They don’t list all our beach rules, but
they hit the high notes. Also, you may see our Beach Ambassadors set
up near the traffic circle on the weekends. They’re there to help answer
any questions people may have as it relates to the beach or the island in
general. So, if you find yourself being asked a question by an
out-of-towner you don’t know the answer to, feel free to send them that
way.
Hopefully the next month goes smoothly for everybody. Before you
know it, Pirates Fest will be here, and we’ll be sliding back into chilly
weather. So, enjoy the outdoors while you can and as always, if there’s
anything we at the police department can do for you, don’t hesitate to ask.
