TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | JULY 2018 31
“You guys are assholes,” Brian says. “I’m going to the beach to
make sure there aren’t any more zombies coming out of the water.”
Brian stops to talk to Jay on his way to the beach. “How’s she
doing, man?”
“Shhhh,” Jay whispers. “She’s hanging in there.”
“Think she’ll be alright?”
“Would you keep your voice down, man? She’s sleeping.”
“No, she’s not. Unless she sleeps with her eyes open,” Brian says
and looks her in the eye. “How you feeling, Carrie?”
She doesn’t respond. Jay touches her neck to check for a pulse.
“Man, I think she’s gone,” he sighs.
“Then why is she looking at me?”
Carrie snarls and reaches out for Brian. Jay grabs the 9mm and
places it to the back of her head and squeezes the trigger, but
nothing happens. She jumps to her feet, crouches, and leaps toward
Brian.
Back at the camp Nate asks the group if they think they should
take the gun away from Brian.
“Nah, man,” Tony answers. “Let him have it. I don’t think he even
knows that the magazine is empty.”
“He has to have bullets on guard duty, right?” Nate asks the
group at large.
“I don’t want to be around him if he has bullets,” Becky offers as
an answer.
“Jay will be with him,” Tony says. “If we’re all going to survive
this we’re going to have to put a little trust in him.”
The crack of a gun stops the conversation in its tracks.
