There’s been some great moments in Atlanta Braves history: Hank Aaron’s
715th homerun to pass Babe Ruth for the all-time homerun record; 14
straight Division titles; World Series win in’95; but MY all-time favorite
Braves moment is the time I pissed next to legendary Braves announcer,
Skip Carey!
I previously told you that my buddy’s father-in-law had season tickets
(since 1966) – four tickets, 11th row behind home plate. Yeah, we did
some major league heckling and they heard every word!
So, perks of the season tickets were that my buddy would get box seats
about 12 times a year. Mind you, this was the mid-80s. The Braves
SUCKED! No one was going to the games, so WE had box seats 12 times
a year and four 11th row behind home plate tickets to every game.
One evening, about 10 of us were rockin’ the box seats. Cool set-up. We
had three rows of seats, plenty of room to walk around. They start you
off with a 12 pack each of Bud, Bud Light, Coke, and Diet Coke. Then you
can order anything you want to eat, and they bring it to you!
Eight of the folks we were with were not very hungry. They were indulging
in a substance that makes you talk a lot and end up doing a lot. My buddy
(we’ll call him Chris) and I ordered a couple slices of pizza and started
slammin’ some Budweisers. When the slices arrived, we bellied up to
the front row of the box and added our own pizza toppings, (psilocybin)
mushrooms. Oh yeah! 35 minutes later, we had our arms propped up on
the ledge, circling the stadium with our kaleidoscope eyes, shit-eating
grins on our faces. Wow! The colors!! I highly recommend it. Meanwhile,
everyone else was walking around, doing more, and talking more
(Remember when I was 3?).
During the 7th inning Stretch, I eased on out to the bathroom, which was
between our box and the WSB Radio Booth. While I was standing there,
doing my thing, in stumbled Skip Carey (this was back when he was still
drinking). He pulled up right next to me, I finished, turned, and saw him.
“Skip!” I yelled. He replied, “Hell yeah, what’s up?” I told him, “I’ve been
listening to you for years!!”
Man, I was Lit Up!!
He mumbled some shit, we shook hands (no we didn’t wash our hands),
and he was gone.
I went back to the box with my story of pissing next to Skip Carey. Hell
yeah! Couldn’t get a word in though. Everyone was still talking a lot and
doing a lot. So I sat back down next to Chris and continued our Atlanta
Stadium Psychedelic Viewing Party!
On yeah, the Pirates beat the Braves 1-0 on a bases loaded walk in the
ninth. GO BRAVES!
Congratulations to Chipper Jones for being inducted into the Baseball
Hall of Fame on July 29.
Also, congrats to the Benedictine Cadets Baseball Team for winning
the 2018 State Championship!!
