32 TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | JULY 2018
Jams for Sam
July 2018, summer is in full swing. The island has been completely
invaded by the tourists. What that means to the locals - no Tybee Market
and no leaving the island on Saturday and Sunday. Why you ask? We have
seen you all navigating the streets of Tybee looking for your vacation spot.
Little secret, our addresses on Tybee are the same as in your home town.
For instance, say you are looking for 1012 Butler. It is going to be between
10th and before 11th, and definitely after 9th. I remember a Breezy fare
from the big city that is New York. Manhattan to be specific. I asked him
for his address here on Tybee and he said it was between 9th and 14th
on Jones Ave. I finally got his address, 1210 Jones and kindly explained
to him how our numbers work. Having been to the big city myself, I know
that is how it works.
I try to stay on Jones in the summer time. I had much rather deal with the
slow-as-a-snail golf cart and the bicyclist that obviously can’t read. C’mon
man, there are signs at every block pointing to the bike path. And you golf
carters doing a top speed of 14mph, be courteous and pull off the road and
let the cars pass. Better yet, get on the bike path. A lot of us driving around
are trying to get to work so we can feed you and keep you hydrated. I beg
of you, move out of the way. I have been warned by the power not to run
anyone else over or give your cart a little nudge as I’m cruising the streets.
First couple times I did it no one said a word, but the last couple times, I
was told they may have to write me a warning. I don’t like trouble people,
so please obey Tybee Law.
So, we have covered the bikes and the golf carts. Now for the dreaded
pedestrian. You do have the right of way at all times. However, help us
help you by pressing the button on the cross walk. Those flashing lights
are a big help to those drivers actually paying attention. Please look both
ways to see if all cars are coming to a stop. I don’t believe this technology
is unique to Tybee, but I see a lot of vehicles and pedestrians confused on
what to do. I myself will always stop, whether you press the button or not.
I understand that we lack sidewalks on the most of the island, but that
doesn’t mean walk 7 wide down the street of your choice. I don’t want to
run you over but it is becoming a struggle. Don’t look at me like wtf are
you doing. It is a street people and the cars are legal to drive on them. They
are actually made for the cars and/or trucks that use them to get to where
we are going. You folks on the south end, bouncing from bar to bar, need
to be more careful when stepping onto Butler, crossing where ever you
please. If I almost run into you when you step out like that, don’t wait for an
apology from me. You will hear some words coming out of my mouth you
may have never heard before. Sorry is not one. Don’t step in front of my
cab at 3:30am, looking for the Gentleman’s Club. The only thing my crew
and I are trying to do at that hour is to get everyone home for the night so
we can get home ourselves.
Everyone enjoy the island, pick up your trash, don’t drink and drive, and tip
your servers and bartenders. Go Breezy.
Sam Adams is in need of our Tybee love!
On-going back surgeries, physical therapy and meds add up and Tybee is
planning a shin dig to help Sam out.
Sunday, July 15th at Benny’s there will be an epic Jams for Sam event.
Beginning at 2pm, all of our favorite players will be jamming out! Jason
Bible, Brandon Coleman, Gordy Hill and Monty Parks are but just a few.
As the music is playing, there will be a Pool Tournament, Dart Tournament,
BBQ & Boston Butt Plates for sale, 50/50 raffles and Baskets of Cheer!
Please come out and help support Sam. You know he would do it for you!!
Any questions, please call Benny’s at 912-786-0121.
