America – Our Home
Roots are hard for people like me, people who were raised like gypsies,
moving house every few years, leaving friends, schools, and towns behind
without a second thought. Origins are hard for people like me, people
who don’t know how to answer the question “Where are you from?”
because it’s too complicated, too involved, we would have to tell life
stories to answer that question and no one is interested in hearing that.
Home is hard for people like me, people who pick up regional accents
in a matter of months—Southern one year, Yankee the next—and don’t
really know for sure what our true voices sound like.
But I have left this country, traveled to other lands in the world,
enjoyed their food, their people, the beautiful things they have to show,
breathtaking sights. I have loved every minute of being gone from here,
yet couldn’t wait to get back. I have sat with excitement as plane wheels
lower and hit, one bump, then another, and a third, then smooth rolling—
back in America. Even I know what home is.
We all know how divided the country is now. We all see the arguments
on Facebook, Twitter, the news channels even pitted against one another.
Everyone thinks they’re in the right, and the other is undoubtedly in the
wrong, holding so tight to our belief sets that we won’t let any other
opinions in. But we share one thing in common—we all call this place
home. Let’s face it, we’re not going anywhere, there’s nowhere else we
would rather be.
This Fourth of July is an opportunity for us to come together and rejoice
over this one thing we have in common. A time to remember how hard
our forefathers fought to bring this country into being and how hard we
should still fight to keep it together. A time to reflect on all the things, both
foreign and domestic, that have tried to drag us to our knees, but have
failed. A time to celebrate that no matter how different we are, we can all
agree that a hot dog and an ice-cold beer go pretty good with fireworks
and that we look damn good in stars and stripes.
So, this July Fourth, make sure you hug a liberal, shake hands with a
conservative, buy lots of cocktails for people in the middle like me who
think all y’all are nuts, breathe in the sweet air of freedom, and enjoy this
place we all call home. ‘Merica.
