accompany that with a grilled cheese for happy time. Find the Wind Rose at 19

80e Gastropub - Not going to lie. We took a
break. Next day though, off we went to 80e
Gastropub. We were super excited about this
sister restaurant to Sundae Café and we were not
disappointed at all! Nick Dunham was the creator
of this Wild Game Chili masterpiece and when I
can stick a spoon in a chili and it doesn’t move,
I’m down! Made with all house-ground meat
of Venison, New York Strip, Elk, Beef Tenderloin
and marinated for four hours with black beans,
basil and some other secret stuff, I cussed out loud in joy!!! OMG!!! Throw some
cheese and a dollop of sour cream on top and SOLD!!!
Gastro Pub has a rotating soup situation and you may find Seafood Bisque one
day and Chicken Noodle the next or maybe Crab Stew. You can get your face fed
at 725 B First Street (next to Chu’s on Campbell, y’all). 912-786-4782.
The Café on 80 Deli & Bakery - The Café on 80 Deli & Bakery was our last
stop and we were excited because it’s the Café
on 80 Deli & Bakery!! The Queen of Soups, Kim
Cisco, made this Broccoli & Cheddar Soup
and it is chock-a-block full of stuff and it’s good
for you! Broc and cheese of course, but also
chopped carrots, heavy cream, onion, chicken
stock, various herbs and salts that is clearly all
homemade, fresh and with love! Good stuff and
you will be delighted to know that the Deli always
has a soup going on, from Chicken Noodle to
Chili, French Onion to Loaded Baked Potato to a Bacon Cheeseburger Soup
(OMG!!!). Make sure to throw in a one of a kind sandwich (the Cowboy and the
Pig N’ Chick are my personal favorites), and you will stagger out of there fat and
happy! You can find the Deli at 303 First Street (next to Chu’s on Jones, y’all).

TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | JAN 2020 9
Wow, that’s some soup we got rocking our island! This project took a bit
more planning and strategy than our normal stuff-our-face, one visit dineand
dash Food Spy, so who else to turn to but
our commander in chief, Alaina (and Mac!), for
assistance. Thank you Mommy Dearest, you
made me want them all! Let’s see what Wen and
I found…
Fannie’s On the Beach - First, we stopped by
Fannie’s On the Beach, and they had two offerings
on this day. We started out with Brunswick
Stew, packed full of pork and chicken, as well
as lima beans, corn, potatoes, onions, carrots
and tomatoes. This soup was very hearty and
satisfying and delivered a wallop of flavor in that
broth!
Fannie’s also had Cheddar Broccoli Soup
brewing and I can say this has also been one of
my all-time favs. Well, I didn’t leave disappointed.
This soup was rich and creamy with just the right
amount of cheddar and tender broccoli that will
leave you craving seconds. The soups rotate daily
and Fannie’s is located at 1613 Strand, near 17th St. 912-786-6109.
A-J’s - Next it was off to A-J’s! Perfectly
picturesque and nestled on the Back River, A-J’s
Dockside has always been one of my favorite
spots and I always get excited for their Crab
Stew. Available daily, this soup is creamy with a
kick of spice and packed full of crab, and always
makes me happy, warm and fuzzy.
The Gumbo is also a menu staple and we were
happy to hear it, and better yet, to eat it! This is
Alan Burn’s homemade recipe and it is full of fat
chunks of everything, from melt in your mouth
chicken and smoked sausage, to big ol’ shrimp,
all seasoned with a homemade roux, onions,
celery, okra and peppers, layered over a bed of
white rice. Flat out yummy and filling. This huge
bowl of comfort will make you happy.
During the week in winter, different soups like
Tomato Bisque and Loaded Potato Soup are
offered, and you have to stop by to check them
out. You can find A-J’s at 1315 Chatham Avenue. 912-786-9533.
Agave Bar and Grill - Our next visit was to Agave Bar and Grill. I love Mexican
food and I can say I don’t know if I have ever
thought to order soup, but boy was I glad I did.
Caldo de Pollo (Chicken Soup) was packed
with chicken, rice, chicken broth, peas, carrots,
corn and onions, with a side of avocado slices,
Pico de Gallo and lime, lettuce, shredded
cheese, sour cream and corn tortillas. I love
that you can toss in your favs to customize this
super flavorful meal. You can find Agave at 402
1st St. 912-472-9022.
Nickie’s 1971 - Our last stop found us at
Nickie’s 1971. They had Clam Chowder
simmering, which always warms my heart,
as well as my taste buds. Chunks of tender
potatoes and clams in a flavorful cream based
broth, this soup was tasty and is sure to warm
you up on a chilly January day. Nickie’s soups
rotate weekly, and they can be found at 1513
Butler Ave. 912-786-4444.
We got you covered this Souperary from the Top 15 soups on Tybee to a doit
yourself Irish Stew recipe provided by my girl, Yaquina. It’s all a win win!!!
Happy eating and Happy 2020!!!
