MAGIC HOUR
By Kristin Hannah
This story begins with Dr. Julia Cates, a world-renowned psychiatrist in
California, heading to hear the verdict in a hearing which could change her
life forever. She is part of a lawsuit for wrongful death brought against her,
the police, paramedics, drug manufacturers and a whole lot more in a case
of murder suicide involving one of Dr. Cates’ patients. Although the courts
decide that she is not to be held responsible in the case, the damage is
already done. Her career is in ruins. She has lost most of her patients and
her practice and now faces life-changing choices.
At about the same time, Julia Cates sister, Ellie Barton, the Chief of Police
in her hometown of Rain Valley, Washington, has a bit of a situation herself.
It seems that a small child, a little girl aged somewhere between four and
six, has wandered into town and taken up residence in a tree with a baby
wolf in her arms. Rain Valley is just outside the deep woods of the rain
forests of the Olympic National Forest in Washington, and there’s no telling
where this child has come from. After the little girl finally ‘flies’ down from
the tree, she is dubbed “The Flying Wolf Girl” and acts like a wild animal
herself and doesn’t speak a word. Ellie is at her wits end trying to figure
out what to do about the little girl and her efforts to find out who her family
could be, so she decides to call on her brilliant sister to help.
When Julia Cates gets the call from her sister, she decides, what the hell,
she might as well try and help her sister, as her life is in ruins in California,
so she packs up and heads to Rain Valley and her childhood home.
When she first meets the little girl, things don’t go very well. Julia is
attacked by her and everyone wants Julia to give up and put the little girl
in some kind of state-run institution. Julia says hell no! She’ll get her to
talk and find out who she is before the state can take over the case, so she
applies to become her foster parent. Julia sets up a room in her childhood
bedroom for the little girl, and eventually names her Alice (after Alice in
Wonderland). It takes quite a bit of doing, but she finally gets Alice to utter
a few words, so she knows she’s on the right track.
In addition to her sister Ellie and her co-workers at the police department,
Julia also has the help of a good-looking doctor named Max (I picture a
young Sam Elliot). Every good book has to have a love interest, right?
So, after many ups and downs, Julia and her band of lovable characters
begin to find out the truth about Alice and where she came from and how
she ended up in the deep woods of Washington State. Where she ends up
is the rest of the story.
I give Magic Hour four roses strictly because I had such a hard time
finishing it. I had to keep putting it down because, well, let me just say, if
you can read the last several chapters of this book without shedding a tear,
then you are a lot stronger than me!
I’ve read another book by this author that was equally absorbing, and
decided that her latest endeavor would be good enough to share with our
Beachcomber readers. I think you’ll agree after you read it, but be sure to
keep plenty of Kleenex on hand!
In the meantime, Happy New Year and read a book. If it’s a good read,
pass it on!
