program has grown and morphed to match the needs
of local employers.”
The goal of a technical college has always been to
provide well-trained entry-level people for the industry.
Students gain confidence and develop the skills they need
to build successful careers. Forming partnerships with ICT
suppliers, BICSI, and local ICT-related companies has
helped to build a program that has awarded more than
800 ICT certifications and an additional 1,000+ industry
related certifications. Don Tjader is one of the beneficiaries
of such a program. His story exemplifies what
thousands of people have or can experience throughout
the nation.
In 2018, Tjader was gainfully employed as a field support
specialist. He was recently married, and he and his
wife had a newborn daughter. The future looked promising
until he found out that he was losing his job. His
employer of 10 years announced that it was closing its
U.S. company operations and moving offshore. What
could have been a devastating situation ended up as
a blessing. Tjader recounts, “Because I was laid off from
a job that moved overseas, I was eligible for a federal grant
that would pay for pretty much any school I wanted to
attend.” While exploring his options, he worked with
a local state-funded job center near his home. “The case
manager put me through skills tests and passion tests, and
that’s how I realized ICT was a perfect fit for me.” Lucky
for Tjader, he had a telecom, ICT training program right
in his backyard.
Tjader’s story has a happy ending. He attended
a 12-week telecom bootcamp. The program focuses
on basic ICT skills and equips participants with experience,
knowledge, and 18 industry-related certifications
that build the confidence to start a new career. The day
Tjader completed the program, he was offered jobs by
two ICT-related companies that came to interview the
newly credentialed students. He ultimately accepted
a low voltage installer position with Cadre Communications,
a small company close to home. In the short time
that he has been working in the industry, he has already
been given additional responsibilities. “I feel like I’ve
come a long way. They’ve let me do the purchasing now
