MARKET THE INDUSTRY
To draw attention to itself and its vast career paths, the
ICT industry needs to sell itself and appeal to those who
thrive in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.
Green points out what he likes best about working
in the industry. “You get to see every aspect of every customer.
You get to be behind the scenes and see how everything’s
made. You get to open up the curtain if you will. If
there's a new hospital going up and you get to be a part
of that, you get to drive by that building for years and
you have the satisfaction of knowing you worked on
that project.”
Hay adds, “There’s a dynamic nature to what we do.
It's always changing and we’re always learning. Just when
we think we've got it figured out, tomorrow comes, and
here's a new curve ball and we're going to be just as busy
as or busier than we thought we'd be. I've been doing it
for 28 years and it's changed just about every year. Speeds
change, technologies change, components change, and
practices change. Then just when you think you've got it
all done, everybody wants to upgrade again and you
rinse and repeat.” Freiboth explains, “We're change junkies
and we enjoy challenges. A lot of our best technicians
in the field are ‘employee-owners’ who are motivated
to tackle new things that’ll give ICT an edge.”
who are at cross-roads in their lives (i.e., people perhaps
making minimum wage and who do not want to be
working where they are). Some experts encourage companies
to get in front of those people and give them
an option for a career where they can support a family
and gain job satisfaction.
Some companies market their open positions in
unique places like maternity wards, noting that no
one is quite as motivated to improve their employment
status as fathers and mothers with one more mouth
to feed.
CC&N looks for individuals with basic skills and is
willing to groom and train based on the needs of the
company. Emilie Poehlmann, HR manager, explains,
“At a basic level, we look for individuals who are reliable,
have customer service skills, a mechanical aptitude
obviously, and the right pace. They need to be able to
move at the pace that the other CC&N employees do.”
Other attributes companies with ICT-related job
openings look for include: a clean driving record, the
ability to work at heights, the ability to distinguish colors,
good analytical skills, and problem solving capabilities.
Also important are finding candidates who like tools
and who function well as part of a team.
So, what would an ICT marketing
campaign look like? Who would initiate
it? How would success be measured?
These are questions that are
hopefully being discussed electronically
and across boardroom tables
nationally and within states and
local communities with the shared
goal to fill the many open ICT-
related positions.
GET CREATIVE
WITH HIRING PRACTICES
Hiring experts are encouraging companies
to get creative with their job
postings and to market jobs as
aggressively and creatively as they
market products and services. One
suggestion is to look for individuals
