Pirates Invade Dunedin History Museum
The Dunedin History Museum located in downtown Dunedin’s vintage railroad
station is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Dunedin Historical Society with a
blockbuster special exhibit, “Pirates: A Merry Life and a Short One.” The eye-opening
show was created by museum curator David Knupp, who was also responsible for
its popular “Jagged Lines: America’s Tattoo Tradition” show. The new pirate exhibit
dispels our romanticized images of devil-may-care swashbucklers’ exciting lives, while
exploring the tough, danger-filled realities and relentless desperation they actually
faced. When the museum reopens, the exhibit will be there through December 31st.
In the meantime, a sneak preview is available as a virtual tour at dunedinmuseum.org.

The James Museum
Shares Bronzes
The James Museum of Western & Wildlife
Art in downtown St. Petersburg currently has
a bronze sculpture by Frederic Remington and
photographs by Edward Curtis on display for 18
months in its Early West Gallery. The dynamic,
visually stunning and important works are iconic
images of the American West in the late 19th
and 20th centuries. Additionally, you can go
online at no charge to “The James Museum from
Home,” a weekly curated exhibit you can enjoy
that relates to its collection and has interactive
content, as the museum shares stories of the
American West, both past and present.
A Historic Look
at Tampa
In From Saloons to Steak Houses,
author Andrew T. Huse looks
back at how people played and
lived in Tampa over the years.
Each section of the book reveals
a particular Tampa perspective.
In the chapter “A Steak House
in the Sky,” he tells of the Bartke
restaurant family that operated
restaurants from the 1950s to
the 1980s. June Bartke, who still
remembers it all, shared her
memories in this book, which
was published by the University
Press of Florida and is available
from major booksellers.
Tiki Bar at The Honu
Kimberly Platt and her wife Lisa Platt have added a tiki bar to the rear of their The
Honu restaurant at 516 Grant St. in downtown Dunedin. Over the years, they have built
their reputation on serving authentic Hawaiian cuisine for lunch, dinner and late night
snacks. The tiki bar with its full bar and crafted classic tiki cocktails is an ideal addition
to their popular “lei’d”-back spot, which offers indoor and outdoor alfresco seating.
