This image is part of the “Blake Little:
Photographs from the Gay Rodeo” exhibit,
currently on display at the James Museum of
Western & Wildlife Art in St. Petersburg.
The James Museum’s current
traveling exhibition of 41 blackand
white images by photographer
Blake Little blends classic portraiture
and sport photography together to
spotlight the gay rodeo tradition of
the American West. The collection of
Little’s photographs, taken throughout
the West between 1988 and 1992, was
developed at the Eiteljorg Museum
of American Indians and Western Art
in Indianapolis, Indiana. It intimately
explores and redefines cowboys’ lives,
identities, and competitive activities.
Photographer Blake Little became so
enamored with the life of the rodeo
cowboy that he mastered the skills
needed to participate and become
the 1990 Bull Riding Champion of the
Year of the International Gay Rodeo
Association. Little’s photographs will
be at the James Museum of Western
& Wildlife Art, 150 Central Ave. in
St. Petersburg through January 31st,
(727) 892-4200.
