Fall Detection
using the Apple Watch
If you’re an Apple Watch owner, here’s a heads up –
there’s a tool on all models that are Series 4 or newer that
can detect a hard fall or impact, and can connect you
with emergency services right away.
Fall detection on Apple Watch is a program that works
through the health app that is installed on the device
when you buy it. Simply open the Apple Watch app on
your iPhone, tap the “My Watch” tab, tap “Emergency
SOS” and turn “fall detection” on. If you entered your age
into the health app when you bought the watch and you
are 65 or over, it automatically turns on.
While it cannot detect all falls, the more physically active
you are the more likely you are to trigger fall detection, due to high impact activity that
it records. In the event of a fall the watch will tap your wrist, sound an alarm and display an
alert. Then you can choose to contact emergency services or advise the watch that you’re
all right. If the watch detects that you are immobile it begins a 30-second countdown, with
the alert getting louder and louder. When the countdown ends and you haven’t responded,
it will contact emergency services. For more information, go to support.apple.com and
search “fall detection.”
