WEALTH MANAGEMENT
MAKE 2018 THE YEAR TO GET FINANCIALLY FIT!
WOW! 2017…..so in the rearview
mirror! My dad used to say: you think
time flies? Just wait till you get in your
70’s! So, here we are – 2018. I know for
many people 2017 flew by very quickly.
The problem is, there are so many “things”
you wanted to accomplish – but, you
ran out of time right? This happens all
the time. The weight loss and personal
fitness industry knows it. Every single
January, thousands of Americans say to
themselves and maybe even to their loved
ones: This is it! This is the year I’m going
to lose weight, get in shape, eat right, get
healthy, get…….. (fill in the blank!) Here’s
some crazy info I found online about new
years resolutions in the fitness industry:
Gym rats notoriously resent the resolution
seekers who crowd their gyms in January and —
like clockwork — they are gone by February (in
fact, 4 percent of new gym goers don’t even make
it past the end of January and 14 percent drop out
in February). If you don’t like waiting to get your
turn on the treadmill, and if you can hold off on
your own resolution for a month or two, sign up
for a membership in February or even as late as
March. As it is, 12 percent of gym members joined
in January and the other months of the year get
smaller percentages of signups.
Crazy right?
No actually, its just typical human
nature. I see the same situation in our
business. People call or come in to see
us, and say: Yes! This is the year that I get
my retirement planning, tax reduction,
or maybe estate planning done. This
is the year that I get a real financial or
retirement plan!
The difference is -in our industry, we do
the heavy lifting (unlike what YOU must
do at the gym!) The other big difference is
– we point out how expensive it will be if
you do NOT implement some or all of our
recommendations. I call these “financial
consequences”. For example, paying to
much taxes in retirement, paying too
much inside your portfolio (hidden fees),
going into a nursing home without a plan
in place. Don’t forget this one, dying with
a simple will or even worse – no will or
estate plan as al l.
I look at it this way, if you cancel your
new fitness program in mid February,
you may gain some weight or just not feel
as good as you should. But ( in no way am
I saying fitness is NOT important) if you
never get around to having a customized,
comprehensive, inflation adjusted and
tax advantaged retirement plan built
and implemented……. It could easily cost
you AND your family thousands even
hundreds of thousands of dollars. I can
promise you this. If you come in and
see me, or someone on my team (initial
consultation is complementary) I will
point out the true long term pain –of
you NOT implementing a plan. Nobody
wants to lose money, its again – just
human nature. But the complexities of
wealth management, tax reduction, and
advanced heath care and estate planning
is too large of a future problem to ignore,
or continue to put in the “some day, I’ll
get to it pile” that we all have.
On my office walls, here in Clearwater
– I have several very interesting stories
of estate planning nightmares of the rich
and famous.
Marlon Brando, Michael Jackson,
Sonny Bono, John Denver, Jerry
Garcia, James Brown, Jimmy
Hendrix, Walter Cronkite, Sammy
Davis Jr. ……and about 20 others. These
are real stories about celebrities who were
really busy people. They all happened to

be excellent at what they did. Just like
the thousands I have served over the past
30 years now, their focus was twofold.
Number one, their families, and number
two, their vocations. Many other “things”
took a back seat. Things like: weight
loss, personal fitness, AND investment,
tax, and estate planning. Unfortunately,
they ran out of time to get financially fit!
So, I leave you now with two thoughts:
1: I hope I have made an impression on
you to take action – get a financial plan in
place. 2: From myself, my wife Elizabeth,
and my entire family here at The Holland
Group, we wish you and your family a
very Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous
2018…..with many, many more to follow!
