TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | MARCH 2018 17
By Margie & Mike
Grab your beads and dust them off, it’s time to celebrate St. Paddy’s
Day, Tybee Style! So if you’ve never experienced a parade on Tybee, this is
a good one folks and you’re in for a treat.
The Tybee Island Heritage Parade is a scaled down version of the
downtown mayhem, but just as much fun in our own quirky Tybee-kindof
way. We are “World Famous” (at least in our own eyes) for parades on
our Island and this is a really fun one for the whole family. Since we do
have about 698 parades a year, to my closest estimate, I dare say we’ve
become quite the pros. Sometimes they start at one end of the Island,
sometimes the middle, sometimes the other end, forwards, backwards,
the wrong way up a one way the street, water, no water, we love a freakin’
parade!
Your best bet to catch this natural phenom is always somewhere on
Butler Ave. between City Hall and Tybrisa, and you may see a parade fly
by at any given moment like a shooting star sailing through the evening
sky. We also like a pop up marathon, it seems, but that’s another story…
All I know is that if the “no parking after 3am” signs are up on Tybrisa,
something is going on.
The Tybee Island Irish Heritage Parade is a great staple where we are
all Irish, at least for the day. Everyone participates in this one and it’s a
great time to grab the kids and take them down front to enjoy the mild
weather and unofficially kick off our spring time season. The restaurants
and night spots should be fully stocked and bringing their A game. We are
all glad to get out of the house and everyone is happy to see each other.
It’s a Tybee Thang.
Our parade is on Saturday, March 10 at 3pm. It’s time for us to Irish-Up
folks. Hope to see you all there!
Live an Irish Blessing:
“Always remember to forget
The things that made you sad.
But never forget to remember
The things that made you glad.”
Happy
St. Patrick’s Day!
