“Yeah,” Becky begins. “But what if those things have taken over
Wilmington too?”
“Then we go to Whitemarsh,” Tony answers.
“And if that’s jacked up?” Nate asks.
“Then we go up the Savannah River as far as we can or we head to Hilton
Head or we head south towards Florida,” Tony replies. “We’ll figure it out,
but to do that we MUST keep our heads.”
“And where do we get fuel, smart guy?” Becky asks.
“Tybee Marina, Bull River Marina, any boat that is docked or moored,”
Tony says. “There are a ton of places to get fuel. We just look until we don’t
see any geeks.”
“Dude,” Nate begins. “Captain Nick always fuels his boat up after each
charter and he keeps it at Tybee Marina.
“I know where he hides his keys,” Becky says.
“And his boat is faster than ours and it’s practically brand new,” Nate
continues.
“And it’s bigger and can go a hell of a lot further on a tank of gas,” Tony
says. “See, this is what happens when we keep our heads and discuss
things rationally. We get great ideas and a solid… Wait… Becky, how do
you know where he hides his keys?”
“That’s none of your business.”
“Ohhhh,” Nate says. “Brown-chicken-brown-cow.”
“Shut up, Nate.” Becky spits at him.
“Before we work out the details of our next plan, how much of it is going
to involve those four over there?” Tony says while pointing at the camp
down the beach.
“I don’t know, man,” Nate says.
“Well,” Becky begins. “I trust Jay, Carrie, and Rudy.”
“Not so much Brian, right?” Nate asks.
“He is a loose cannon,” Tony says. “He was the one who went to look for
booze instead of food when they went over to Tybee.”
“What if we find safety tomorrow?” Nate asks. “Or the Army? Or even
people that don’t want to eat us?”
“Then we stay? We come back for our friends?” Tony shrugs.
“We don’t even know if we’re coming back to Little Tybee, do we?” asks
Becky.
“No,” Tony says. “I guess we don’t. We’re gonna have to bring all our
stuff with us when we go.”
“We can’t fit the buried cache of food, ammo, and guns along with all our
tents and gear on the boat,” Becky says.
“We’ll just have to prioritize what we bring,” Tony replies.
“How about bringing half the cache, a couple tarps, water and sleeping
bags?” Nate says. “We can leave the tents up. That way they’ll think we
haven’t taken all our supplies and if we get into trouble we have a place
with supplies to come back to.”
“There’s no way those guys can fit on the boat anyway,” Becky says. “So,
the real question is what are we going to tell them?”
“We’ll just tell them that we’re going to recon Wilmington to see if this
thing is happening there too,” Nate answers.
“Let’s work out the details of the plan and then we’ll join them for
dinner,” Tony says and then adds, “I have a strange feeling that they’re
going to want something from us.”
With the details of the plan worked out and the sun going down, Becky,
Nate, and Tony head over to the other camp for dinner. When they get there
Tony says, “Did you guys notice how low the tide is tonight?”
“Yeah,” Brian says, and points toward the horizon. “Do you see that huge
full moon over there? When the moon is full the tides are extreme.”
“Anyway… What’s for dinner guys?” Becky interrupts them. “I’m
starving.”
The whole gang sits down to a lovely dinner of canned peaches, canned
green beans, and beef jerky. Nate explains the plan to the group. The
evening is going quite well until the expression on Becky’s face changes
from casual enjoyment to terror. Cast in an eerie shadow from the rising
full moon, she sees five lumbering figures dragging themselves from the
water’s edge. To be continued…
