New Works

A Modern Master
By Aaron R. Fodiman
When Henry Plant built the Hotel Belleview, his luxury Gulf Coast resort on a bluff overlooking Clearwater Harbor, he
probably believed it would remain there forever. Although Henry Plant died two years after the hotel was built, his son
Morton carried on its heritage. Morton built Florida’s first golf course there. He also underwrote the nearby hospital
in Clearwater that now bears his name, Morton Plant Hospital, following his son Henry Plant II’s tragic automobile
accident, which brought the area’s lack of medical care to light.
